Video40th Birthday .... Xtreme Style!Sep 28, '07 6:29 PM
for everyone
Last night my friend Shane treated me to a surprise early birthday outing. I was told to wear comfortable clothes and sneakers, and that was about it. Our first stop turned out to be Go Kart racing. We got in two 10-minute races and it was a total blast. I did pretty well on our first run and got a little cocky going into the second one, which was on a harder track. Got my ass handed to me by Shane that time. :-)

After a quick dinner we headed on to our next stop .... indoor skydiving! Shane had been telling about this for a while, and I'd seen some videos online, but nothing can really describe the adrenaline rush this gives you. It was one of the most amazing experiences I've ever had. I highly recommend it to anyone. You get all of the rush of jumping out of an airplane without the risk. I did four 2-minute flying sessions, which is the equivalent of a dozen or more skydiving free falls.

Watch the video through to the end and you'll see the instructor get in the tunnel with me and take me for an insane ride. Also, here's a video of the instructor putting on a performance of his own at the end of our session.

All in all, an awesome evening and a great way to celebrate me turning old!

Surprisingly, I never felt the least bit nauseous, even when he was whirling me around. My throat and sinuses were totally dried out afterwards though from having the wind blowing through them at high speed for so long.

That is so friggin cool! Reminded me a little of the contraption from Willy Wonka where they floated up with the bubbles and down with burping...but way more awesome. It just looks incredible, I wanna try it!

Happy Birthday!!

I'll add to this that Dave was a great first time flyer! He flew like he had already done a half dozen skydives or logged several minutes in the tunnel. It was awesome to watch him start to feel the air and play around w/ subtle body position changes.

For others that want to see if a tunnel is close -- http://www.skyventure.com (that's the company that provides the technology). For the Multiply team - there is one in Orlando!

Yes, I still skydive (from planes) but over the last few years my jumping has slowed. Life has gotten in the way of the weekly trips to the dropzone. So I've only done about 10 jumps in the last year (vs. 150-200 jumps/year before). The tunnel is great because we can head over for an hour and still get a fair amount of air time.

Thanks Dave for posting this! It looks like fun. Happy Birthday!

My boss and her husband are skydivers - they and their kids go to a place like this on vacation instead of the theme parks. They love it.
