Description:
Aunt Fran's banana cake is somewhat legendary in the Silverman family tree (my father's mother was one of 5 Silverman sisters). Widely recognized as being the best banana cake baker, the rest have attempted with varying degrees of success to equal Aunt Fran's masterpieces.

There's even some debate as to what the "true" recipe is. To my knowledge, this is it, but I wouldn't be surprised if she held something back just to make sure that no one equalled her.

This is my absolute favorite dessert. For most people, this recipe makes a full cake that will serve plenty. My brother, father and myself, on the other hand, have all been known to take down a cake in one sitting. :-)

Ingredients:
4 tblsp sour cream
1 tsp baking soda

1 cup sugar
1/2 cup butter softened
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup mashed bananas (about 2 or 3 bananas)
1 1/2 cups flour

Directions:
  • Mix the suger, butter, eggs, vanilla and bananas in a bowl.
  • Slowly mix in the flour.
  • Mix the sour cream and baking soda, and then add to the mixture.
  • Put some flour at the bottom of the baking pan and then add the mixture.
  • Bake at 350° for 45 minutes to an hour.
  • Cover with Betty Crocker or Duncan Hines chocolate frosting. Don't even think about skipping this step!

is the taste almost the same as banana bread?

my mom used to make it when I was younger and it was soooo good. Telicia also started making it and it was good too...

I'd use an 8 inch square baking pan.

What a great way to immortalize somesone! The recipe is wonderful, but I would top it with something homemade and use a 9x12 baking pan. Also, the last time I used Heidi's version, it required less baking time. Test with a toothpick for dryness after 30 minutes. Perhaps in an 8" pan it takes more time.
Hersheys has an easy frosting recipe:
1 stick butter, 2/3 c. cocoa, 3 c. powdered sugar, 1/3 c. milk and 1 tsp. vanilla. Melt butter, stir in cocoa and alternated sugar and mild to desired consistency. Add more milk if necessary.
