Blog EntryWhere's the matzoh?!Apr 21, '08 4:16 PM
for everyone
See the photo to the right? Do you know what that is? You probably don't recognize it, but it's matzoh. Homemade matzoh to be exact. That's right, I made my own matzoh, so you'll have to forgive me if it doesn't look perfect.

Now you may be asking yourself, why would Dave make his own matzoh? He's not the most observant Jew and I've never seen him buy matzoh, let alone make it. Well, I'll tell you why. Because there is absolutely NO MATZOH in all of San Francisco! Seriously. We're talking not a single piece of unleavened bread to be found. The handful of grocery stores that we called put the blame on a distributor. Maybe so, but I can guarantee that they never run out of matzoh in NY. Clearly there aren't enough Jews out here. No wonder they can't make a decent bagel.

We've already established that I'm not Mr. Super Jew, but Lyla goes to preschool at the JCC and she's been singing Passover-related songs for weeks now. The guy from Comcast Cable got treated to the following ditty last week:

"Hamen. Hamen. The Jews will never bow down. NO THEY WON'T!"

He probably thinks we're part of some cult. In any case, all of Lyla's singing and story telling got Tracy all psyched up to do a seder. Next thing you know we're on the hunt for matzoh. Admittedly, we waited until the last minute. But still, not one box to be found?!

All kidding aside, it has actually been kind of cool to listen to Lyla spout off about all the Jewish stuff she's learning at school. Through her, I guess I'm reliving my days in Hebrew school way back when. Goodness, I'm getting all verklempt! I can't ever see us getting all religious or anything, but maybe Lyla's one year at the JCC will give us enough of a kick in the ass to at least celebrate holidays other than just Hanukkah.

Lest people's expectations (mom, dad .. this means you) start getting too high, I should point out the second photo, our seder plate. The orange thing is a shankbone that Lyla cut out of paper. :-)

Too Funny!

Maybe al lthe Matzah was used to fuel the new Shofar Hybrid cars that run on Matzah.....the Northern Cali people are always the first.

Seriously...Publix in Delray had 2-4-1 matzah and matzah ball mix BEFORE passover. Who loves the chosen people!?!?! Delray does! Come move to the Avenue!

Making your own Matzoh is impressive. What's next...when are you going to make your own Gefilte fish? I was always fascinated by that as a kid. Have a nice Passover!

If by fascinated you mean completely grossed out, then yes, me too! I actually broke down and tried it not that many years ago and it doesn't really taste all that bad.

some people get their jewish experiences through food, oh well, jewish holidays really boil down to this------"they attacked us, we won, let's eat" that's jewish history, a little condensed, but hey, we're friends here at multiply.com

There was a bit on NPR a few days ago about wide shortages of kosher-for-passover foods due to a couple of big distributors/manufaturers getting out of the business. Maybe that explains the lack of matzoh in SF?

You have to love Jewish guilt:

Several Orthodox Jews wryly noted that waiting until the last moment to purchase matzo didn't treat Passover and its rituals with due respect. "For somebody truly observant, they're not out shopping on a Saturday," said Mark Cohen of Oakland, who attends Congregation Beth Jacob. Those who didn't buy well ahead of time "are not planning as wisely as the holiday would dictate."

Loved the Seder plate. You made the best of the holiday by creating the symbols yourselves!

I, too, waited until late to buy our matzohs for our seder. Only a box or two left on the shelf. (Maybe TOO MANY Hebs here???!!!) (It was Days before Passover!)

Happy holiday Love,
Lynn

This quote from the NY Times article is fantastic
...
Phone calls and e-mail messages to the largest suppliers of unleavened bread products, Streit’s, Manischewitz and Yehuda, brought no response on Monday, possibly because executives were off for Passover, which began Saturday night...

matzah is one of those unique products that has multile functions--after passover,, it is used as insulation in construction sites---great sound proofing----can be used in speaker systems also
