Blog EntryWelcome back Tequila. I've missed you!Mar 12, '08 6:50 PM
for everyone
The highlight of our trip to Tahoe was sledding with Lyla. A close second, though, was Riaz introducing me to Jose Cuervo Reserva de la Familia. Quite simply, the best tequila I've ever had.

For the most part, I haven't been able to drink tequila since Senior Dinner at my fraternity house back in 1989. In a spectacular display of binge drinking and general irresponsibility, each senior picks a bottle of booze and calls up underclassmen to do shots until the bottle is gone. If you're going to drink half a bottle of booze, why not tequila, right? Cuervo 1800 was my weapon of choice.

Side Note #1: Lyla, Adrian - Do as I say, not as I do.

Side Note #2: See the formative years of the Multiply management team in the photo to the right. Michael and Peter were the first two guys I called up to do shots with me, and it seems like they've been making me pay for it ever since. :-)

I realize that having a "tequila incident" makes me about as unique as being right-handed or having brown hair. Seems like just about everyone has had one. The point is that for longest time I couldn't even bear to be near an open bottle of tequila, let alone drink some. That tequila smell would instantly trigger the gag reflex. All of you right-handed brunettes know exactly what I'm talking about.

With the passage of time and the advent of premium tequilas like Herradura and Patron, I've been able to stomach the (very) occasional shot. The notion of actually sipping tequila though was still utterly repulsive.

Nearly twenty years on, I can finally welcome tequila back into my life. Reserva is so smooth that it's a pleasure to sip straight up. No mixers. No rocks. It has many of the qualities that have caused me to explore whiskey (bourbon, specifically) in recent years. Its got a smokey caramel flavor, but it goes down much smoother than whiskey.

I haven't had any other ultra-premium tequilas yet, but so far Reserva is in a class of its own. For as good as Herradura Reposado is, by comparison its a lot closer to that old school bottle of Cuervo Gold than it is to Reserva. Do your self a favor and pick up a bottle. It runs between $80 and $100, but it's worth every penny.

Now if you'll excuse me, tequila and I have to make up for lost time!

Dave - as another right-handed brunette, I can appreciate your reintroduction to tequila and your introduction to good tequila. It 'only' took me about 7 years. I was out with a good number of coworkers when my boss ordered something good that I wish I remembered. Anyway, I literally was pacing back-and-forth worried that I was going to puke in front of all my coworkers. Well, I've been enjoying sipping a good tequila ever since.

Welcome back!

slowly but surely, i pick up info about the "early years" of my son's life---and all these years i believed him telling me that he was a dues paying member of the men's auxillary of the WCTU

Glad to hear that there is hope to return to tequila. It was prairie fires that did me in, and haven't been back to tequila since. To this day, the smell of either tequila OR hot sauce makes that gag reflex return. To Casey and Rider- pick something else on your 21st birthday.

I'm with you (just like everyone else)! A tequila incident from my senior year in high school when i visited friends at college did me in. The smell from 100 feet away with send me gagging. So you can see how shocked I was when my wife (newish girlfriend at the time) was doing shoots of tequila at a party. I said, "But you don't really drink." She replies, "But if I do, it's gonna be tequila." And shots no less - My friends had the sly smile as if they returned to corrupting my girlfriend.

Well...another right handed brunette here...Tijuana...1988. Still can't go near the stuff---not even a whiff from across the bar or a girly frozen 'rita. While you have given me hope for the future, and a lesson to never say never, I may have to stick w/ Corona when we go out for Mexican food. Hey...now you can have a nice shot of tequila and chase it w/ that Clamato concoction. Did you ever try it?! Enjoy, amigo!

I tried some shots last weekend of something called a Red Pussy. I dont know what exactly was in it, but it was a lot of tequila. Not bad though.

Tequila? Please.

My kryptonite?! Ouzo.

It's because of Ouzo I needed foot surgery (broken glass removal), two ports (one in the chest then arm) and almost two months of antibiotics to help fight a nasty bone infection. Never, ever again...

As one of the people who had the pleasure of baby-sitting you that night (while you were on the floor of the shower on the 2nd floor), all I can say is welcome back on the horse. And don't call me from your shower floor.

I find Patrol Silver to be a good sipping tequila. Makes a decent martini, too - just substitute it for the vodka or gin. I've looked at the Reserva - guess you think it's worth the cash - might have to check it out.

Was drinking your favorite whiskey (Woodford Reserve) neat at a Martini bar in Texas last week with my boss. As we were closing out the joint he asked the bartender to upgrade my drink to the top whiskey they had - she informed him I was alread drinking it...

As a fan of the "Texas Lemonade," it is unfortunate that I have a love-hate relationship with the agave-based nectar. When in Vegas, try Agave for their extensive tequila offerings.

It seems that one never has good stories to share following a "tequila incident." It's never "Look Bob! Look at that amazing fence I built! Yup! Painted it, too!" The stories are always, without fail, prefaced by a "Uhhhhhhhhhhhhh (urp)" and then a predictable, "Man...don't ask."

However, I did recently meet a very nice man during a Patron-drenched evening. News at 11 !

ps: Joel---this is how most parents learn the finer points of their children's formative years. In retrospect and on the internet! :))
