for everyone
Anyone have a recommendation on a good travel pillow? With board meetings every other month now, I see lots of cross-country red-eye flights in my future. I've tried a couple of the inflatable neck pillows with minimal success. My sleep is in your hands. Help!

I've tried a few different ones and there are some that are definitely better than others. For me the firmness is the issue -- too soft and it's as if it's not there, but too hard and you feel like you're sleeping on a rock.

I'll bring the one I like into the office... I think it was (cue Walter) from Brookstone.

Try the Tempur-pedic neck pillow. Its the one I use on trips. The inflatable pillows allow too much bounce.

All of those U-shaped pillows seem to just push your head forward so that you feel as if you are sitting in the take-off position again. I was thinking about my old neck rest from the Volvo! It's skinny in the center (for your neck) and fans out with pillows to each side. There's an elastic to hold it to the seat. This would place your head against the seat, support your neck and allow you to nap on either "pillow." Currently, it's stored with the movers in Florida. Be here April 1st!

I bring my actual pillow with me on all flights/long trips. This is great for the airplane and the hotel. I have a squishy pillow, it's full size but I can squish it into a bag/carry on. Has helped me sleep on many a cross country flight.

Dave, with 2 kids at home, and one about 7 months, I'd think you'd be able to pass out just about anywhere, especially in a seat...even if it's on a plane :)

Bad news from my end.... the travel pillow that I love either lost it's tag or never had one. It's one of the horseshoe around-the-neck types with a medium density filling -- the most important characteristic for me.

Micro-bead filling: too soft doesn't provide any support
Air filling (inflatable): too hard and uncomfortable
Husk/bean filling: can be too hard or too lumpy depending on coarseness
Foam filling: too hard

Not much info to go on, I know.... other than I think it's best to be able to touch the pillow prior to purchase.

I'll also second Jodi's recommendation, at a minimum until you find something that works better for you -- bringing your own pillow really isn't that inconvenient (at least I haven't found it to be) and it's the ultimate in comfort.

When you get to the airport, hit the bar, drink two martinis and one glass of red wine. Pillow won't matter.

Here is a pillow that looks like the one that Ava has and likes for travel (you can borrow it for your next flight) - http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=14490698

I use a small square pillow - but I should get a U-shaped one. http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=10060915

In addition to the pillow, my red-eye flight regimen includes a Window seat, comfy socks (shed the shoes), eye mask from Brookstone, soft ear plugs, Tylenol PM. I put the ear plugs and mask on right after takeoff (after the cabin pressurizes), I usually sleep right up until landing.

To cut down on the pack volume of any pillow, I use a small SpaceBag to squeeze all of the air out -- helps fit it in my carry on bag.

Dave, have you looked at United p.s. from SFO to JFK? It looks a fair bit more comfortable than most domestic transcon offerings, but I've not tried it myself. Probably because it's about $1/mile. Crikey!

I bought a small baby pillow in target for under $10. It even has a pillowcase that can be removed and washed. Works great.
