Blog EntryBeer and Clamato juice?!Jan 10, '08 10:17 PM
for everyone
I saw this in the deli where I buy my lunches. Clamato juice makes for a fine bloody mary, but mixed with beer? Kind of sounds gross. So gross that I was tempted to try. I just didn't want to be that guy walking out of the deli with a tall-boy in a bag at lunch time. :-)

I might have to bite the bullet one of these days though and have my own little Chelada happy hour.

That sounds pretty disgusting, actually...however, a regular old Chelada is outstanding, as long you use regular tomato juice, a twist of lime, a tablespoon of tabasco or Texas Pete brand picante (delicioso!), ice and a salted rim. As long as it isn't that junk from Miller called Chill...that is absolutely putrid.

Actually, a regular old Texas Red Eye is good - just Campbell's TJ and some Bud Light.

Let's see... I don't drink beer, I don't drink tomato juice, and I don't drink... er... whatever liquid is made from clams. Yeah, I think I'll let Dave be the daring guinea pig for this one.

Sounds gross. I wikipedia'ed it, since I am on a wiki-kick tonight, and it came up with this...
The Michelada is a popular Mexican alcoholic beverage of a genre known in Spanish as cerveza preparada (prepared beer) and in English as a variety of cocktail. There are several variations. In some cases it is similar to a Bloody Mary but containing beer instead of vodka, although a less complicated concoction of Mexican beer with sauces and lime juice added (see recipe below) is also referred to as a Michelada. The drink dates back to the 1940s, when mixing beer with hot sauce or salsa became popular in Mexico. In recent years, the drink has begun to become popular in the United States, and now various ready-made mixes are marketed and sold to US consumers.

Micheladas. Dobish got the recipe down, although I usually add salsa Magi. This will induce heartburn. You have been warned.

Hmmm... when I was at Bar l'Opera in Mexico City (the one that Pancho Villa allegedly left a few bullet-holes in) one or two of my friends were doing something... I think it was alternating shots of tabasco and tequila. (I didn't join in the masochism.)

Dave, since tomorrow is Friday, why don't you and some of your buddies have a fun little happy hour. See how many you can drink. It would be fun to hear 1) what you crave for late night munchies after drinking these (nachos?) or 2) how gross it was to be drunk and get sick off these and/or 3) how dreadful a Chelada hangover is. I dare you.

I just can't find this definition of "fun" in my dictionary.

Don't bite dave!! You must be a old enough, ergh Wise Enough, not to take on an alcohol related dare. And certainly not a Clam related dare. Just have a good 'ole margarita for Friday happy hour. Hell, your in SF now -- have one at your desk for lunch, Peter shouldn't mind.

You can NEVER have too much Tabasco...I'd like to try it with Dave's Insanity Hot Sauce...that stuff is ridiculous!

I remember going to a taco joint in Idaho and they had this sauce on the table. You are supposed to only take a drop or two for your taco...well, the plastic cap with the hole popped off while I was shaking it and I doused one taco with about a quarter of the bottle. I tried to tough it out, but I immediately got that uneasy feeling down below, started getting chills and it really ruined my entire lunch.

I was totally kidding about the dare. BUT I think it's great that many people think that Dave would even consider this dare... :-)

Dave's Insanity? Feh. I'll bring some real hot sauce into the office.

Micheladas are bad ass. What I've discovered though is that each place I've had it at has their own recipe. It is about as inconsistent a drink as I've ever had. Maybe like Purple Hooters too. I've given up trying to duplicate the PHI's version. Anyway, I agree with Dan, the hotter the better ... at least until the next morning. And I've never had the pleasure of praying to the porcelain god after a night of micheladas, but that probably would be pretty damn nasty.

I remember seeing people drinking beer with Clamato since I was 9 years old, and I am 38. But when I used to drink Budweiser and that was from the late eighties until the mid 90’s, I tried it with Clamato because a lot of my friends drank their beer with it and I wanted to know what the whole deal was. The first time that I tried it, I didn’t like it but after a few tries I got to like it.

Well now I drink Heineken, and ounce in a while I like to add Clamato to my beer just for a different taste. But I learned that most people that drink beer with Clamato at all times do it because they eventually don’t want to get drunk to fast, so it helps them last longer if they are in a party.

Others have told me that the beer leaves a bitter taste in their mouth and so they add Clamato, in other words the tomato and the salt in it will make the beer’s bitter taste smoother, my question is why not try another beer ?.

Or to simplify, "So don't do that, then!" :)

This is really popular in mexico, I tried it for the first time last year. I don't like clamato so I was never into it, however I was with a bunch of people who were drinking it and I was peer pressured into it. It was really good. They also put chilli powder on the rim of the glass to give it an extra (mexican) kick, it was good!

My husband LOVES these. He will buy the clamato juice and mix it with beer. I haven't seen them sold like this yet. Will have to look for them next time.
